Physical Therapy Doesn't End When You Leave the Clinic
At Longevity Rehab Center, we see patients typically 2–3 times per week. That leaves 4–5 days in between sessions where the work continues at home. Your home exercise program (HEP) is not optional — it's a core part of your treatment plan and a primary driver of how quickly you recover.
What Is a Home Exercise Program?
A home exercise program is a customized set of exercises prescribed by your physical therapist to be performed at home between clinic visits. These exercises are specifically selected based on your diagnosis, functional limitations, and stage of recovery. They are not generic — they are designed for you.
Why Your HEP Matters So Much
- Frequency drives progress. Muscles and nervous systems respond to repetition. Exercising daily — even for 15–20 minutes — accelerates tissue remodeling and neural adaptation far faster than clinic visits alone.
- It reinforces what we do in the clinic. The manual therapy and exercises we perform in sessions are most effective when you reinforce them at home.
- It prevents regression. Without home exercises, patients often lose progress between sessions, which slows overall recovery.
- It prepares you for discharge. Eventually, you'll be fully managing your condition on your own. The HEP teaches you how to do that safely and effectively.
Common Reasons Patients Skip Their HEP (and Solutions)
- "I forgot." — Set a daily reminder on your phone at a consistent time.
- "It's too complicated." — Tell your therapist. We'll simplify your program to the essential exercises.
- "It hurts." — Report this immediately. Some discomfort is normal; sharp or worsening pain is not.
- "I don't have time." — Most effective HEPs take only 15–20 minutes per day. Break it into smaller segments if needed.
